Rutland Black Furnace Cement is what you need if you are making your own castable refractory. This cement is rated to 2000°F. It can be mixed with Perlite to form a homebrew castable refractory for building a metal melting furnace.
Rutland Furnace Cement is a pre-mixed silicate cement that withstands temperatures over 2000° fahrenheit without failure. The smooth consistency feathers very thin to make metal-to-metal joints smoke and gas tight. For installation and service of furnaces and oil burners. Seals flues and coal or ash pit doors. Also for small woodstove repairs.
The receipe for a homebrew refractory is given in an excellent booklet "An Improved Electric Radiant Shop Furnace" by Dan Hartman. The booklet is available for download at Dan's Workshop. It's only $3.95 and is packed with good how-to. Get a copy if you plan to build your own furnace.
The refractory consists of 1/2 Gallon of Rutland Black Furnace, 8 quarts of Perlite, and about 1/2 cup water. Mix the cement with the water to obtain a thick mixture about like that of mashed potatoes. Mix in the perlite until it is well coated. The mixture should be a little on the dry side and somewhat crumbly. See Dan's booklet for complete directions. Makes about 1550 cubic inches.
