Pouring Shanks
Tongs:
Crucible tongs are welded steel tools used to lift a hot crucible from a furnace. The type shown here is used for lifting a crucible straight up from the opening of a top loading furnace.
The Latching Tongs have a latch bar holds the tongs closed to make lifting easier. A user adjustable stop is provided that limits the amount of clamping force applied to the crucible.
Non-Latching Tongs do not have the latching bar. A user adjustable stop is provided that limits the amount of clamping force applied to the crucible.
Charging Tongs are used for placing metal in hot crucibles. These charging tongs have a 24 inch reach.
Shanks:
After lifting from the furnace, shanks are used for holding the crucible to pour the molten metal into your prepared molds. These pouring shanks are equipped with a lever operated spring loaded clamp or a sliding bar that secures the crucible into the shank ring. Some shanks come with a bottom retaining plate (not shown) that the crucible sits on below the ring.
Hand Shanks are held by one person.
Single Ended Shanks are held by two people. The pouring action is controlled by the person on the end with the two grips.
Double Ended Shanks are held by two people. Both ends have double grips. The pouring action is controlled by one end, while the other set of handles are free to rotate.
Adjustable Shanks will fit a range of crucible sizes. The holding clamps are screw adjustable to fit the crucible in use.
